The first-ever standalone model of Volvo's spin-off company Polestar, the 1, will be making its North American debut on August 23 during the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
It will be the first opportunity for the 200 customers who have placed deposits to see the model first hand. It will also be the perfect opportunity for the carmaker to show off in front of the 200 people that made the largest number of orders of any country.
“North America is a major market for our new brand, and we have received great feedback and high interest in the Polestar 1 from our American customers,” said in a statement the company’s CEO Thomas Ingenlath.
"Now it’s their turn to see the car in person and in a beautiful environment.”
The appearance of the model in North America comes two months after the company selected Gregor Hembrough, until recently Vice President of major regions for Volvo, as the man in charge with local operations.
The Polestar 1 is a plug-in hybrid that uses two electric motors on the rear axle and integrated starter-generator at the crankshaft. Two 34 kWh batteries provide the power for an electric range expected to be 150 kilometers (93 miles), more than any other plug-in hybrid currently on the market, the company says.
The internal combustion engine that goes with the electric drivetrain is the T8 Drive-E turbocharged 2.0-liter that delivers 600 horsepower and 1,000 Nm of torque.
The car will be manufactured starting 2019 in China, and it will sell for $155,000. Ordering a 1 is as easy as placing a $2,500 deposit and wait for the car to arrive in more than a year’s time.
Polestar was created in 2005 based on the Swedish Touring Car Championship team Flash Engineering. Until recently, it acted as the official tuner of the Swedish manufacturer. Polestar was purchased by Volvo in 2015 and turned into its electric car brand last year.
