2019 Nissan Leaf Adds Rear Door Alert, 60-kWh Battery Incoming

Introduced in the U.S. of A. for the 2018 model year, the second-generation Leaf prepares to roll out for 2019 with unchanged pricing. As such, the entry-level trim retails from $29,990, whereas the SV and SL start at $32,490 and $36,200 not including the $895 destination charge.

Buried deep in the press release for the 2019 Nissan Leaf, the automaker let this bit of information slip out: “A longer-range version will be available in the future.” In other words, this is the first time Nissan has acknowledged the 60-kWh battery option (believed to be called E-Plus) is in the works, probably for the 2020 model year.

On that bombshell, what did change on the 40-kWh version that Nissan manufactures in Smyrna, Tennessee? Rear Door Alert (RDA) as standard is the answer you’re looking for, making this update somewhat of a disappointment.

Nissan is missing the point when you think about how hard and fast the competition is catching up, a mess-up that shows in the sales figures for the Leaf. Despite the downward trend, Nissan is much obliged to remind us the Leaf sold more than 123,000 examples in the United States since 2010. On a global level, make that 348,000.

With 151 miles of range, the Leaf comes with the e-Pedal system, Automatic Temperature Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, and 7.0-inch infotainment as standard. The 147-horsepower EV levels up to 17-inch machine-finished wheels, navigation, SiriusXM Radio, Intelligent Cruise Control, and phone mirroring for the mid-range trim level. The SL, on the other hand, adds a portable charge cable (120 and 240 volts), LED headlights with LED daytime running lights, leather seats, Blind Spot Warning, and Intelligent Around View Monitor.

Regardless of trim level, the 2019 Leaf is backed up by a limited warranty with coverage for eight years of 100,000 miles. Nissan Road Assistance is a complimentary benefit, covering flat-tire changes, trip interruption benefits, vehicle lockouts, and towing service for 36 months or 36,000 miles.
