2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class Spied in Detail

Perhaps Mercedes won't develop a Maybach version of its the current GLS, but this next-generation model will probably tick all the luxury boxes, optionally, of course. We're looking at the latest spyshots of the GLS II, spotted near the German brand's test facility.

Even though BMW just presented the X7 as a concept, the two should come out in 2018, starting a rivalry that will last for many years. It might be a little early to talk about the GLS's design, but we believe it will be a looker.

Mercedes has always had an eye for sound design, and even the current GLS looks upmarket despite being based on the GL. The evolutionary model seems to have a more prominent grille and the same chunky upright looks as the 2019 GLE-Class, a smaller 5-seater.

Of course, the camouflage on this prototype is heavy, covering the hood and marking the rear quarters. But we do see that the suspension is lower, and there are significant cutouts for the exhaust.

Could this be an early glimpse of a softer AMG model? It's hard to tell what the lineup will be like, but since the GLS is the SUV equivalent of the S-Class, it should have a GLS 560 model with a V8, unlike the GLE which won't have any non-AMG 8-cylinder engines.

Still, the bulk of the range should be made up of the new inline-6 turbo engines, which we are very excited about. They will be offered in both Europe and the United States and will be mated exclusively to a nine-speed automatic gearbox and a 4Matic all-wheel drive.

The least powerful model should be the GLS 350d with 286 HP. At the opposite end of the scale, we should see a 469 HP GLS 560 and a 612 HP 63 S model from AMG. Though unconfirmed, a V12 flagship has also been rumored for many years, but they can sell the Maybach version even without it.
