The Mercedes-Benz A-Class was among the first new cars of the year coming from the brand with the three-pointed star logo in 2018.
Presented online on February 2, the car made its official debut in front of a live audience at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show in March. It came as the techiest car in its segment, packed with anything and everything from MBUX infotainment system to artificial intelligence and Linguatronic.
Safety wise, the model proved to be a hit as well, at least as far as specialized organizations are concerned. The Euro NCAP crash tested the model, as it did many other cars this year, and found it to have a 96 percent rating in adult occupant protection, 91 percent rating in child occupant protection and 92 percent in pedestrian protection.
The farthest the A-Class has been from a perfect score was the 75 percent rating received for safety assist systems. Even so, the car managed to top all other models in the small family cars segment, and also became the best overall performer among all cars tested in 2018.
Aside for the new A-Class, the Euro NCAP crowned two more other kings of the crash tests. In the large family car category, the Lexus ES was named the best performer, while in the large off-roaders the Hyundai NEXO was declared the winner.
The Euro NCAP introduced a new category this year, the best performing hybrid or electric car. This too was won by the Lexus ES.
“In 2018 we introduced tough new tests, with a particular focus on Vulnerable Road User protection,” said in a statement Euro NCAP secretary general Michiel van Ratingen
“The three Best in Class award winners this year all clearly demonstrate that car-makers are striving for the highest levels of protection and that Euro NCAP’s assessments are a catalyst for these crucial safety improvements.”
