Ever since Mercedes parted ways with McLaren (the move happened after the SLR project), the German carmaker has been improving its go-fast game. And while the SLS that followed was more of a Grand Tourer, the Mercedes-AMG GT that currently reigns belongs to the supercar segment.
When Affalterbach came up with the toy, it didn't hide the fact that it was targeting the Porsche 911. Of course, with the Neunelfer lineup packing north of twenty models, the GT also had to come with a generous range. And we are now looking at the final testing phase of the new range-topper.
We're referring to the Mercedes-AMG GT R Clubsport and while the nameplate is still tentative, the overly aggressive nature of the animal is a certainty.
The supercar, which is expected to be a track special borrowing elements from the racecar version of the machine, has been testing since last year. And we are now back with fresh footage, which shows the GT R Clubsport doing its thing on the Nurburgring.
As for the Neunelfer rivalry, the twin-turbo nature of the newcomer and the 600 hp expected output place the GT R Clubsport closer to the GT2 RS. Nevertheless, the expected Ring number of the machine should bring it into GT3 RS territory - keep in mind that the 3RS, which is animated by a naturally aspirated 520 hp flat-six, needs 6:57 to lap the infamous German track.
Interestingly, the GT R Clubsport and the GT3 RS met during the said Nordschleife session, as you'll be able to notice in the piece of footage at the bottom of the page.
As the polymer rear window found on the Mercedes-AMG prototype we spotted last year, the newcomer will packs a diet and we're expecting some carbon bits as well.
Given the testing timeframe, we're expecting to see the production version of the street-legal track toy by the end of the year. Meanwhile, you can listen to its twin-turbo V8 fury in this clip.
