This is only the second acceleration test we've seen featuring this engine, after the CLS 53, of course. Mercedes has brought the AMG brand into the world of hybrids with a new inline-6 twin-turbo that resides under the hood of every E53 model, including the Coupe.
The previous E-Coupe and E-Cabrio didn't have an AMG version, and Mercedes promised to fix that. But instead of just offering the 63 sedan's 4.0-liter V8, they opted for a six-cylinder. While customers aren't too happy about that, it's still a fast car, and we find it sounds acceptable. The powertrain will also power the GLE pretty soon.
By the way, "E53" is also the codename of a BMW, the first generation of the X5, so now the two rivals have something weird in common. Getting back to the engine, this twin-turbo unit features the EQ Boost system, delivering a burst of 22 HP and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque. It's also said to reduce fuel consumption.
This 435 horsepower, 520 Nm E53 Coupe is said to do 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds. However, it seems a little slower in this video, which is something we also observed with the CLS. That's a 2-ton coupe right there, and maybe the engine needs to be broken in a little bit as well. When de-restricted, this car will also hit 270 kph.
The E53 Coupe starts from £62,835, making it significantly cheaper than the £72,095 CLS 53 four-door coupe. We also find it looks classier as well, a bit reminiscent of older Mercedes coupes. If you want more practicality, there's also the £61,835 sedan and £63,835 E53 wagon with the same engine in the UK.
Options include the £2,595 Premium Plus equipment line, which adds a Burmester sound system, Keyless-Go Comfort, and a panoramic glass roof. Also worth considering is the £1,695 Driving Assistance Plus package.
