After Mercedes-AMG began teasing the yellow-painted A35 4Matic, it was a matter of time until official pictures of the hot hatchback would leak onto the Internet. And the moment of truth has come, revealing that the A35 4Matic looks just as serious as it promises to be capable at carving corners.
The successor to the A250 Sport sits below the A45 4Matic, but on the other hand, Mercedes-AMG has a thing of saving the best for last. Opinions on what propels the compact-sized model are different, but what is certain is that the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine develops more than 300 horsepower. The most optimistic scenario would be 340 PS and 430 Nm of torque.
Even if the vehicle architecture is front-wheel drive by nature, the 4Matic system in the A35 is set up for neutral but spirited handling. As in better-than-RS3 handling, with the high-performance Audi being notorious for having too much weight on the front axles.
Coming as standard with a dual-clutch transmission and dual-exhaust system, the A35 features a menacing appearance thanks to front bumper-mounted canards and vents in the rear bumper. The motorsport-inspired exterior design continues with the black-painted wing, large brake calipers, and low-profile tires.
The interior of the A35 features the dual-screen layout of the regular A-Class, including the MBUX infotainment system and touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel. The engine’s red line appears to be somewhere just over the 6,000-rpm point, which is alright considering that the engine features a thumpin’ great turbocharger.
Combined fuel consumption under the WLTP test cycle is rated at 7.4 to 7.3 liters per 100 kilometers, with CO2 emissions ranging from 169 to 167 grams per kilometer. Real-world driving scenarios would likely take the all-new A35 4Matic to more than 10 l/100 km in the city, but on the other hand, who cares? It’s a cracking little car, which promises to excel at what matters most to the driver-centric customer!
Look forward to the in-the-flesh debut next month, at the Paris Motor Show. The French venue is also where Mercedes-AMG is expected to announce the pricing for the next best member of the A-Class family after the 45.
