Is Mercedes saying goodbye to diesel engines? Not even close, as the German automaker has just introduced a new 2-liter setup for the award-winning A-Class hatchback. These have already become available in Britain, and we have the full details.
We were among the first to confirm that a new 2-liter unit will indeed replace the 2.2-liter under the hood of these front-wheel-drive German cars. The "200 d" and "220 d" made their debut in the B-Class at the Paris Motor Show and can also be ordered in the sportier, sleeker A-Class.

An adaptation of the unit you will find in the C-Class, this 2-liter makes more power than the engine it replaces. So while the old A 200 d had 136 HP, this one produces 150 HP, which is still 13 less than the 1.3-liter in the A 200. But we still think it's more than enough, combined with 320 Nm of torque, an impressive mpg number (67.3) and low CO2 emissions (110 grams according to WLTP).

The standard sprint to 62 miles per hour (100 km/h) takes 8.1 seconds while the top speed is 137 mph. The A 200 d is available in two trims: Sport and AMG Line, with prices starting from £28,805.

As for the A 220 d, it makes 190 HP, compared to the 177 of the older model. Its 400 Nm of torque trumps even the Golf GTD while economy numbers aren't far off the 150 HP model at 65.7 mpg combined and 114 grams of CO2. With a 0 to 62 mph sprint time of 7.0 seconds and 146 mph, this version of the A-Class can keep up with some hot hatchback. Prices start from £30,005, and it's only available in AMG Line trim.

The Sport trim comes with 7-inch double MBUX screens, a reversing camera, 17-inch wheels, navigation, active lane assist, comfort suspension, DAB radio, LED headlights and carbon fiber dash trim. However, you'll still need £1,395 extra for the Executive pack which adds those nicer 10-inch screens, heated seats, and electric folding mirrors.

The AMG Line looks better, riding on 18-inch AMG wheel and featuring a different body kit. However, it doesn't get the big screens as standard either.
