If you’re tired of seeing everything in full HD, then take 7 minutes of your time and have a look at this masterpiece: the 2019 IndyCar Road America Grand Prix, shot with a 1968 movie camera.
The race itself took place this June at the Road America track in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Having re-entered the IndyCar circuit in 2016 after an eight-year break, the venue is now one of the pillars of the IndyCar series.
The video you see below is the work of YouTuber and race driver Nick Shirrell. Together with a bunch of friends, he’s a member of a ChampCar Endurance Racing Series team called For the Sake of Racing. In his spare time, he’s busy filming exciting things in unlikely ways.
For this project, Shirrell traveled to Elkhart Lake with a 1968 Canon 1218 Super 8 camera and Kodak 50D & Kodak 200T films. The goal? Give the IndyCar race that retro feel some of us have been lucky enough to experience first-hand back in the day.
After filming the images, Shirrell edited the film so that now it features the complete dish: 1960s-style intro, fuzzy-sound commentary (we’re not sure how he managed to pull this off) and end credits to match.
There are even a few scenes that look like they have been shot in an alternate universe: modern-day Ferrari and Lamborghini cars shown in grainy, strange frame rates on the sideline of the event.
The video was posted on Youtube on Wednesday (August 7), and it is already amassing views and comments. People love the feel of the video, the atmosphere it shows, and most agree this retro-look fits motorsport racing like a glove.
Broadcasting of motorsport racing began in the 1950s and became commonplace about a decade later, and this video looks like it belongs in that day and age. For some, viewing something like this brings back memories of car movies from the same era.
