Towards the beginning of October 2018, the Environmental Protection Agency published the 258 miles of range the Kona Electric is capable of with the 64-kWh battery. Now is the turn to report the pricing, which starts at $36,450 excluding destination charge.
Factoring in the $7,500 federal tax credit and delivery, you’re looking at $29,995 for a subcompact crossover with a real-world range of 259 miles. Make no mistake about it, that’s among the best deals you can get for an electric vehicle in the United States at the time being.

“Pricing for other Kona Electric trims will be announced shortly”
according to Hyundai, which means that more standard equipment is in store for higher trim levels. The 39.2-kWh battery won’t be offered in the United States, which is somewhat regrettable considering such a model would take on the Nissan Leaf with the 40-kWh battery and 150 miles of range.

Regardless of battery pack, the Kona Electric comes from the get-go with multi-link suspension at the rear as opposed to the ICE-powered Kona. In the case of internal combustion, models equipped with all-wheel drive level up to the independent setup.

With 201 horsepower (204 PS) and 291 pound-feet (395 Nm) of torque from a front-mounted electric motor, the Kona Electric also happens to be adequately powerful for the segment. Accelerating to 60 miles per hour takes 7.6 seconds, and top speed is rated at 104 mph (167 km/h).

“Our new Kona Electric crossover is an exceptionally affordable, stylish and efficient compact electric CUV, tailored to the needs of customers who pursue eco-focused active lifestyles requiring generous range,” explains Mike O’Brien, vice president of Product, Corporate and Digital Planning. “We’re confident it will set new standards for the electric-propelled compact CUV segment, with outstanding value, range flexibility, appealing design, cutting-edge connectivity, and class-leading available safety features.”

The Kona Electric will be available in California at the beginning of 2019, with ZEV-focused states to follow up in the western and northeastern regions of the United States. As for the closest alternative to the Hyundai, sister company Kia is much obliged to sell you the e-Niro with the same 64-kWh battery and 201-horsepower electric motor as the Kona Electric.
