Just because it's got an American badge doesn't mean the Edge ST is going to be a performance bargain. Prices start at $42,335 before destination, but tick enough options boxes and you could easily go over $50,000. For that kind of cash, you could get a 375 horsepower Ford Expedition or even a nice Lincoln. Hope this performance SUV thing works out!

While the ST ventures into premium car territory, it does at least have 335 horsepower and 380 pound-feet (515 Newton-meters) of torque, which is way more than the $31,000 base model. AWD and an 8-speed auto developed by Ford are a packaged deal.

Starting with colors, we found that four of them are standard, namely Agate Black, Ford Performance Blue, Magnetic gray, and Ingot Silver. Obviously, the blue is its trademark color, but $400 Ruby Red and $600 White Platinum sound like conversation starters.

The packages are pretty strangely named, though. "400A" is the name of the list of standard features, which according to the configurator includes 20-inch wheels, SYNC 3, leather seats and a towing package. On top of that, you can add "401A", bringing voice-activated navigation, rear heated seats, park assist and a 360-degree camera, and a front 180-degree camera with split view and washer. It doesn't sound like something you'd need on an ST, but don't forget the Edge is big.

A box we'd consider ticking is the ST Performance Brake Package, costing a whopping $2,695 and equipped with 13.6-inch ventilated disks, red brake calipers, vented dust covers, summer tires and 21-inch gloss black wheels (20s are standard). We think the ST should have made all those standard, since Ford Performance demanded these bigger rotors with increased heat capacity. But at least the body kit is good right out of the box, with those black accents and double exhaust.
