We've already seen what the beast that is the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 can do, but we're asking you to not turn your full attention to the upcoming mid-engined C8 Corvette, as the uber-C7 isn't done surprising us. And the latest bomb dropped by the 'Vette comes from the Car & Driver Lightning Lap 2018.
You know, the track test where the American journos take a hefty group of machines to the Virginia International Raceway and throw a stopwatch in the mix.
Well, the ZR1 managed to deliver an astounding stopwatch number in this year's test, with the Chevy one-upping the new Ford GT, as well as the McLaren 720S.
In fact, the only car that left the Corvette trailing in its wake was the 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS. Then again, with the Rennsport Neunelfer having held a Nurburgring production car lap record, this didn't come as a surprise. Nevertheless, the record has been grabbed by the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ.
Now, we must also mention the classes used by the magazine in its velocity evaluation, so, without further adom here are the tiers: LL1 up to $34,999, LL2 $35,000–$64,999, LL3 $65,000–$124,999, LL4 $125,000–$249,999 and LL5 $250,000 and above (there's also LLTruck).
Note that the Corvette's performance is even more notable when we consider the fact that it belongs to the LL4 class, while all three competitors mentioned above come from the LL5 club.
Of course, lap times don't deliver the complete story, since the behavior of these beasts is just as important. And this is why we've added three videos at the bottom of the page, with these showing the laps of the ZR1, the 720S and the FGT.
Those of you looking for the full adventure can find it on the C&D website, but you should know the content is not officially available in Europe.
