Joining the Enclave and LaCross, the Regal is the third Buick to receive the Avenir treatment without taking the Avenir Concept into account. Based on the Opel Insignia that’s built in Germany alongside the Regal, the Avenir trim level serves as the American take on what Ford is doing with the Mondeo Vignale over in Europe.
In other words, the Avenir is as spruced up as the Regal can get. Available in Sportback flavor with front-wheel drive with the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the Regal Avenir could’ve been a lot better as a driver’s car if Buick were to give it AWD and the 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V6 from the Regal GS.

With 250 horsepower and 260 pound-feet on tap, the newcomer relies on a nine-speed automatic transmission. Hydra-Matic 9T50 is how the torque-converter gearbox called, and in case you missed this bit of information, the Ford Motor Company refused to use the 9T50 in its front-/all-wheel-drive vehicles in favor of an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Setting the Avenir apart from the rest of the Regal lineup are the three-dimensional mesh beautifying the upper part of the front grille, 19-inch wheels finished in Pearl Nickel, Whisper Beige leather upholstery, Avenir embroidery on the headrest, and so forth. Truth be told, the interior still isn’t as luxurious as you’d expect from a mid-size sedan with premium aspirations.

Standard features include advanced driver assistance (rear cross traffic alert, lane change alert, blind zone alert), 8.0-inch infotainment with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bose eight-speaker audio system, wireless charging for Qi-enabled smartphones, and cloud connectivity that enables over-the-air software updates.

Going on sale in early fall, pricing for the Regal Avenir isn’t known at the present moment. What Buick would like us to know is that the range-topping trim for the 2018 model year represents half of Regal sales, meaning that the Avenir could become a commercial success. In the case of the LaCrosse, the Avenir sells 70 percent faster than other trim levels according to the General Motors-owned automaker.
