Confirmed to bear the G07 codename, the X7 in question is a U.S.-spec xDrive50i manufactured in Spartanburg, South Carolina. xDrive stands for all-wheel-drive, and 50i manes that there’s a twin-turbo V8 under the hood. The 4.4-liter engine is a variation of the N63, and the powerplant is listed “N63M” in the VIN decoder, with 340 kW on tap. Converted to metric and U.S. ponies, that works out to 462 and 456 HP, respectively.

Optioned in Alpine White and fitted with 22-inch alloy wheels, the X7 at the center of the story benefits from an off-road package and the M Sport differential. Five-zone (!!!) climate control, panoramic sunroof, night vision, head-up display, rear-seat entertainment, Harman-Kardon premium audio system, and leather-and-Alcantara upholstery are on the menu too.

The xDrive50i has been previously confirmed through the BMW model codes list published at the beginning of the year, from which we learned that the powertrain will also be available in Europe. The list further mentions the xDrive30i, xDrive40i, xDrive30d, xDrive40d, and xDrive50d, all of them equipped with the eight-speed automatic transmission developed by ZF.

There’s no denying an iPerformance-branded plug-in hybrid will be added to the lineup once series production of the X7 starts in Spartanburg, and there’s a case to be made for at least two M models: X7 M and the M50d.

As a competitor for the Mercedes-Benz GLS and full-size Range Rover, the 2019 BMW X7 has a lot to prove once the automaker takes the veil off. Customers who would rather spend their money on something plusher will be offered an alternative within the BMW Group, as Rolls-Royce inches closer to the launch of Project Cullinan.
