Following the 8 Series and Z4, the world’s favorite automaker from Bavaria prepares to roll out the X7. The full-size luxury SUV is based on the CLAR platform, and bearing in mind BMW has a knack for M-ifying the X5 and X6, it’s a matter of time until the G07 will spawn the F94 as a competitor for the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 S 4Matic+.
The codename comes courtesy of BMW Blog, which cites “various sources from Munich” regarding the 2020 BMW X7 M. A decision is understood “to be made in the following weeks,” but then again, the outcome of the decision in question is as obvious as it gets.

As much as people hated the X5 M and X6 M when they came out, both models proved the naysayers wrong by means of sales. The X3 M and X4 M are also coming, leaving the X7 M to complete the lineup with approximately 600 horsepower from the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 we know and love.

“What about the X2 and X1?” Regarding those two, BMW is testing the M35i (alternately known as but not likely to be called M40i) at the Nurburgring for quite some time now. Just around 300 horsepower from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine are in the pipeline, which isn’t bad at all for a compact-sized SUV with all-wheel drive.

Turning out attention back to the X7, the 2.3-ton curb weight won’t help BMW at all with its “ultimate driving machine” promise. But on the flip side, the X7 and X7 M aren’t made to thrill in the corners like the 3 Series and M3. Luxury is the name of the game this time around, with BMW positioning the X7 as the jacked-up brother of the 7 Series.

In the first instance, the X7 will be available with six- and eight-cylinder engine options. The lineup will start with at least one six-cylinder turbo diesel, continue with the xDrive40i and xDrive50i, then the automaker will welcome the M50i and M50d.

Regardless of powerplant, the ZF 8HP transmission will take care of shifting duties. Adding to the luxurious character of the X7, BMW will offer an optional gear lever design with Swarovski crystals.
