The first plug-in hybrid version of the new generation X5 was announced by BMW on Friday, with the official market launch of the model set for 2019.
The combustion-electric combo that will power the SUV is made of a 3.0-liter in-line 6-cylinder gasoline engine and BMW’s eDrive system powered by a lithium-ion battery. Both are mated to an 8-speed Steptronic transmission and the xDrive all-wheel-drive system.
The combined power output of the two power plants is rated at 394 hp, 286 of which come from the combustion engine alone. Top speed for the car is set at 146 mph (235 km/h).
The electric range the SUV is capable of thanks to the eDrive system is of 50 miles (80 km), three times more than the predecessor. The measurements for the range were taken according to the new WLTP regulations.
The engine and battery of the new X5 variant are packed in a body a tad bigger than the version it replaces.
The new 2019 X5 has a wheelbase 42 mm longer than its predecessor (1.65 inches), is 36 mm longer (1.4 inches) and 66 mm (2.6 inches) wider than the outgoing version. The road stance has improved as well, thanks to the 19 mm added to its height (0.7 inches).
At the interior, the dashboard features, for the first time, a fully-digital instrument cluster in the shape of a 12.3-inch screen. There is another screen that acts as control display, located in the center of the dashboard.
Starting with this generation of the X5, this line of vehicles will come with pre-installed Microsoft Office 365 and Skype for Business. For select NFC-capable smartphones, a Digital Key to the car would also be offered.
Officially, the plug-in hybrid X5 it will be called xDrive45e iPerformance. Prices for the new model were not announced.
