In production at the Regensburg plant in Germany since 2017, the X2 is now available in M35i specification. The newcomer slots at the very top of the range, above the sDrive28i and xDrive28i. Being the king of the hill, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder develops 225 kW (306 PS; 302 hp) in this application.
The transverse-mounted B48 isn’t a product of BMW M like the S55 six-cylinder or S63 eight-cylinder, but the M Performance branding also reveals that it isn’t an ordinary engine either. Torque is up there with the best of them as well, developing 450 Nm (332 pound-feet) from low down in the rev range. For reference, the 2.0-liter in the Camaro makes do with 400 Nm (295 pound-feet) from 3,000 to 4,500 revolutions.

Moving on to the chassis of the Sports Activity Coupe, the M Sport Suspension system comes with adaptive dampers. The M Sport Differential at the front axle ensures sharp turn-in, reducing traction loss. The M Sport braking system includes 18- and 17-inch rotors, along with blue-painted calipers. The steering rack has also been modified to match the nature of the X2 M35i, with BMW promising “an impressively direct and precise steering feel.”

From a visual standpoint, the exterior comes with model-exclusive exterior trim painted in Cerium Grey. At the rear, the M Sport rear spoiler makes a great pair with the M Sport Exhaust system, flaunting 100-mm exhausts pipes. 19-inch M Sport light alloy wheels in 715M styling come as standard. Customers can level up to 20-inch wheels if they so wish, coming with a bi-color finish.

Hopping inside the car, the M Sport Package welcomes the driver with the M Sport leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift paddles and M35i lettering on the door sills. The sports seats are an optional extra, available in three distinct flavors: Fabric Trigon with Alcantara (black upholstery with blue accents), Leather Dakota Magmared (red perforated leather with black accents), and Leather Dakota (black-finished perforated leather).

BMW will kick off X2 M35i production in November 2018 for North America, whereas Europe will have to wait until March 2019 to get a taste of the hottest X2 on offer. On that note, the X1 M35i should go official in less than a year's time.
