From the very beginning, we knew the 2019 BMW 3 Series lineup would be topped off by the M340i and M340d. Now BMW has offered the best teaser yet for the gasoline-fueled model, which borrows some of the exterior styling of the 8 Series and Z4.
Codenamed G20 and scheduled to premiere in the flesh at the 2018 Paris Motor Show in October, the 3 Series will also introduce an all-electric drivetrain sometime in 2020. Of course, the M3 will serve as the cream of the crop, packing an all-new inline-six with more than 460 horsepower.

There’s talk of all-wheel drive and nearly 500 horsepower according to a handful of reports on the G80, which is even rumored to feature 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. On the other hand, let’s wait for the X3 M to come along and give us a glimpse about what the M3 has in the pipeline.

As opposed to the S58, the B58 engine in the M340i is expected to develop in the ballpark of 360 horsepower and 370 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission should come standard, sending the suck-squeeze-bang-blow to the rear wheels. Because it shares the CLuster ARchitecture with the X3 M40i, the 3 Series in this specification should be available with xDrive as an option.

In regard to corner-carving abilities, the list of optional extras should include a limited-slip differential. And as you would expect from such a high-performance vehicle, the traction and stability control systems will feature an off function to the delight of drivers who like get the rear end out.

As you can tell from the teaser image, the M340i M Performance can be had with LED headlights as standard and laser lights as an optional extra. As for technology, expect 5 and 7 Series treats such as remote parking, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, gesture control for the infotainment system, and so forth.
