Considering how much time the R8 e-tron spent there, we wouldn't be surprised if the e-tron quattro eventually ends up at the Nurburgring. However, for now, we'll have to make do with the sight of an all-electric SUV made by Audi parading the streets around the most famous track in the country, maybe even the world. That's not too bad, right?
The e-tron quattro project first appeared as a concept at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. Initially, we all believed that the electric powertrain was just to show off a new body style, Audi's BMW X4-rivalling Q6. However, it soon became clear that every VW Group brand was interested in EVs, and that a dedicated platform had been developed.
Now though, the e-tron SUV is wearing its production body, and it's completely different to the one we saw in 2015. Thanks to Marc Lichte's design work, the vehicle looks like a conventional vehicle, a close cousin of the all-new A8 and upcoming Q8 SUV. Yet it's anything but that.
The front end presents a massive Singleframe grille that connects to the headlights. There are also intakes to channel air into the wheel wells and another one at the bottom of the bumper. If we didn't know better, we'd think this is a hybrid.
Just as the Tesla Model X, the stance of the Audi EV is relatively low, even for a crossover. It doesn't dominate the road like a Range Rover, but the e-tron quattro has a certain futuristic presence.
According to our info, there will eventually be three versions of the e-tron SUV, but only two will debut in 2018. The first will have around 300 horsepower and costs $60,000. The other one will produce 430 horsepower and boast a bigger range of around 500 kilometers or 310 miles. It should sticker somewhere in the region of $75,000.
That's not bad at all, but the Audi will make a killing on the options. These will include all the features we see on the 2018 A8 limousine, including that snazzy interior and the self-parking feature. The final version will be a twin-motor performance model that takes the fight to the P100D with about 500 horsepower.
