We've known all along that the new Audi A6 was going to get a 2-liter TDI. But both the output and the fact that the A7 Sportback also offers it is slightly surprising.
Unless we're mistaken, this is a longitudinal version of the EA288 Evo that's been earmarked for the A4, as well as the next VW Golf. Out of its four cylinders, this TDI can push out 204 HP and 400 Nm of torque, placing it above both the old 2.0 TDI and rivals like the BMW 520d and Mercedes E 220 d.

However, we suspect the A6 will eventually get a de-tuned version producing either 150 or 163 HP. As for the A7, it's supposed to be a premium car, so we're surprised even by this configuration. However, the funny thing is the original Sportback coupe had 204 HP versions of a 2.8 FSI and 30 TDI, both of which were V6s.

This kind of engine isn't designed to set your pulse racing. And because of the new emissions tests, there's no chance of going below 100 grams despite the mild hybrid setup with brake energy recuperation.

But it's not slow either. The A6 40 TDI (that's what they call this engine) will do 0 to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds while the A7 needs 8.3, as does the A6 Avant. In both scenarios, power goes to the front wheels via a 7-speed twin-clutch gearbox. For the record, an A6 45 TDI with 231 HP needs 6.3 seconds while the 50 TDI with 286 HP takes 5.5 seconds, but both of those are quattro-equipped.

Price and fuel economy are obvious advantages of the 40 TDI. The cars average about 4.5 l/100km (62.8 mpg UK). Prices have already been announced in Britain, where the A6 starts from £38,640 as a sedan and £40,470 with a wagon rump. The A7 is more expensive at £47,140 or £50,040 with the S Line body kit and interior.
