Not including the $995 destination and delivery, the 2019 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid is $1,500 more expensive than the MDX SH-AWD with the Technology Package. And at $52,800, you’d better believe the Sport Hybrid comes with all the bells and whistles one would expect from a premium mid-size crossover with three rows of seats.
What’s new for 2019 in addition to the retail price? For starters, four exterior color options: Canyon Bronze Metallic, Majestic Black Peal, Performance Red Pearl, and Gunmetal Metallic. The interior also benefits from new wood trim, high-contrast stitching for the seats and door panels, four-way lumbar control, and 12-way adjustable seats for the driver and front passenger.

Compared to the SH-AWD Technology Package, the MDX Sport Hybrid has 31 more horsepower and adaptive dampers as standard. Even though efficiency is the main purpose of this vehicle, the hybrid drivetrain delivers a combined output of 321 horsepower and 289 pound-feet from a 3.0-liter V6 and three electric motors.

The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission – closely related to the nine-speeder in the NSX according to Acura – offers “ultra-fast gear changes” by its own right or manually by means of steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The electric motors driving the rear axle, on the other hand, are designed to enhance cornering control by delivering positive torque to the outside rear wheel.

With the Advance Package specified from the options list, the MDX Sport Hybrid will set you back $59,550. And despite the additional equipment, the EPA-rated fuel economy stays put at 27 miles per gallon combined (26 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway).

As America’s all-time best-selling three-row SUV, the MDX has come a long way since the first generation. Something that didn’t change since 2000, however, is the relationship with Honda. To this day, the Pilot serves as the backbone of the Acura MDX.

Speaking of the Pilot, the Ridgeline pickup truck is also based on the Honda-badged mid-size crossover utility vehicle. The Japanese automaker is having so much success with it, that even Ford might be planning to go unibody with a Focus-based pickup truck.
