2018 Volvo XC40 Crash Test Reveals It’s One Safe Small SUV

If there’s an automaker worthy of being synonymous with safety, that would be Volvo. Through Swedish inventor Nils Bohlin, the Gothenburg-based company introduced the 3-point safety belt as standard safety equipment in 1959, opening up the patent for any other automaker. Fast-forward more than six decades after that industry-changing and live-saving moment, and the all-new XC40 boasts “award-winning safety” in the compact crossover segment.

The Euro NCAP and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety have yet to put the newcomer through its paces. Knowing that it takes time until these organizations get their hands on the XC40 for the purpose of assessing its crash test performance, Volvo took to itself to prove how good the XC40 is.

During development, the compact-sized utility vehicle was assessed at the Volvo Safety Center in the automaker’s home city. There’s video to prove the small crossover’s proficiency at protecting occupants in the event of a crash. In the side impact test, the newest Volvo of them all holds its own at 50 km/h (31 mph), with the seat-mounted side and curtain airbags doing their job well.

Even when it comes to the rear occupants, the crash test dummy appears to get out of the violent ordeal with nothing more than a scare. Being developed for hip people living life in the big city, the XC40 bristles with urban traffic-oriented safety and driver assist features. Pilot Assist, City Safety, Cross Traffic Alert with Brake Support, 360° camera system that aids with parking, Run-off Road protection and mitigation, there’s a lot of clever tech in there.

For this reason and the fact that it’s generously equipped from the get-go, the cheapest 2018 Volvo XC40 currently on sale starts at $35,200 in the United States. The T5 AWD Momentum is the culprit, and for its size, the 2.0-liter Drive-E turbocharged inline-4 is more than adequate thanks to 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The T5 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid is on its way, as are lesser powertrain options and an electric take on the XC40.
