The Touareg, as I’m sure you know, is a household name for the Volkswagen brand. It arrived at the same time with the Porsche Cayenne and, for what it’s worth, it’s a rather splendid mid-size crossover SUV. But then again, the Touareg is getting a bit old.
The second generation (Typ 7P5) of the gentle giant made its debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, an event which took place six years ago. The refresh rate for the Volkswagen Group nowadays is seven years or thereabout, which means that the all-new Touareg is slated to arrive in 2017.
And good golly, here is the 2018 Volkswagen Touareg before we were supposed to see it. Spied by the carparazzi roaming about in Germany, the third-generation Touareg looks like an evolution of the current model, not a revolution.
Despite the black cladding on the front fascia and rear end, it’s easy to notice that we are dealing with a larger front grille, LED headlights, LED indicators, and Audi-esque LED taillights. From the side profile, the mid-size crossover SUV looks as if it had gone to the gym on a daily basis.
The interior can’t be seen from this set of spy photographs, save for a camo blanket on the top of the dashboard. Under the skin, the all-new Volkswagen Touareg rides on the MLB 2 platform, also known as the backbone of the Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga, and 2018 Porsche Cayenne. In other words, this baby will be lighter and better to drive than the current-generation model.
In the United States, the 2018 Volkswagen Touareg will go on sale next year in 3.0-liter V6 and in hybrid or plug-in hybrid form, eventually. In the Old Continent, on the other hand, the 3.0 TDI will be king. The turbo diesel powerhouse will be good for 218 and 272 PS, respectively. Both tunes will be manhandled by a silky smooth eight-speed automatic transmission.
