At roughly the same time that VW rolled out all its Frankfurt goodies, the Tiguan Allspace went on sale in Germany and all the other major European markets. In a way, this reminds us of the Jetta/Golf SportWagen, as its stretched body has a very "Made for America" vibe around it.
Three trim levels are available, the usual Trendline (from €29,975), Comfortline (from €32,375) and Highline (from €40,300). You won't find a big V6 under the hood, as the engines are pretty much the same as in the regular Tiguan.
The base unit is the 1.4 TSI ACT (no, not the 1.5 TSI). It produces a familiar 150 HP and 250 Nm of torque. With a 6-speed manual, it will get to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.5 seconds and has a top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph).
That's not bad, but for €32,850 you can have the 2.0 TDI with 150 HP and 340 Nm of torque. The performance numbers are almost identical but it uses 1.1 liters less fuel per 100 km/h. For €2,000 more, you can add a 7-speed DSG and 4MotionAWD is another€2,020.
The middle trim level also has access to a 2.0 TSI motor packing 180 HP and 320 Nm. With standard 4Motion and DSG, it starts at €37,500. A more powerful 190 HP diesel engine is also available from €40,900. Both versions weight about 1.8 tons and require 8.2 or 8.6 seconds to get to 100 km/h, respectively. However, Comfortline still doesn't get you the LED headlights or digital dashboard.
The supreme version of the Allspace can also be had with a GTI-like 220 HP TSI motor for over 43,000 euros. But the flagship of the range is the 2.0 BiTDI with 240 HP and 500 Nm costing €46,600. We think it's overkill, particularly in a vehicle like this. But Volkswagen likes to offer its customers plenty of choice, which is nice.
Compared to the regular Tiguan, the Allspace is 215mm longer (4,701mm), split evenly between the wheelbase extension and the longer rear overhang. The trunk has grown by 145 liters with the seats up or 265 liters with them folded flat.
