Despite what the rumors said, Volkswagen is going to offer us a second generation of the CC four-door coupe. Road testing started many months ago and should be completed by next year.
But you don't have to wait that long to know what's going on. What look like patent images of the CC's design have leaked online. We're not 100% sure they are the real deal, but they do match the design of the test prototypes.
So we can use them as a basis for some new renderings, like the ones we have before us today. Remco M has been photoshoping cars for many years, and he usually gets pretty close. That's why we're showing you his take on the 2018 CC today.
The history of the four-door coupe begins with the reveal of the Passat CC in 2007. While based on the sedan (the old one), it was 27 mm (1.06 inches) longer, 50 mm (1.97 inches) lower, and 36 mm (1.42 inches) wider.
In 2011 came the mid-life facelift, and with it, the name was shortened to just CC. We've heard rumors that for 2018, they are going to change it again to something more catchy.
While the original CC was inspired by the Mercedes CLS-CLass, the next one will follow the guidelines set by the Audi A7. In place of a normal sedan trunk, they are going to install a liftback system that makes carrying larger items easier.
Don't underestimate the importance of this all-new model, as using the MQB platform will give it access to profoundly improved technologies.
Due to emissions regulations, the current CC is stuck with what we'd call crappy engines. You can either have a 1.4 TSI with 150 HP or the 2.0 TDI with either 150 or 185 hp. The next generation will surely have up to 300 ponies and access to 4Motion.

Slippery like a fish
The popularity of the four-door coupe can be attributed to the fact that it can do things a 2-door coupe can't. However, Volkswagen wants to change the formula in several significant ways. While the original CC was inspired by the Mercedes CLS-CLass, the next one will follow the guidelines set by the Audi A7.
