2018 Volkswagen CC Fastback Hatch Spied Testing AWD Accompanied by BMW 4 Series

The brand new Volkswagen CC was first seen testing in Death Valley. However, one prototype was spotted halfway around the world at the VW and Audi test facility near the Nurburgring, where it was being benchmarked against the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe.

Obviously, there's a clear difference between these cars, as the CC uses the same FWD underpinnings as the Passat, while the 4 Series is rear-wheel-drive and obviously a little more fun. But if you have traction concerns, know that the 2018 CC prototype is sporting a 4Motion AWD system. That's important because you can't get it with the current model anymore.

AWD is not surprising, considering 4Motion is an essential part of the regular Passat's European arsenal. Speaking of which, we expect that most of the engines will be shared as well. 2017 is the year Volkswagen will launch its new 1.5 TSI with variable turbine geometry, and that's also the year when the CC will debut, most likely at the Geneva Motor Show in March or slightly after that.

The 2.0 TDI will also play a considerable part under the hood of this four-door coupe, with outputs ranging from 120 or 150 PS and going all the way to 240 PS. The most powerful models should have a gasoline TSI motor producing somewhere in the region of 290 horsepower.

As far as styling is concerned, the new CC will draw heavily from the Sport Coupe GTE concept. Even when that study was revealed in Geneva last year, we knew that VW had learned a thing or two from the Audi A7 Sportback, copying the fastback roofline that hides a practical hatchback design. Open that, flip down the rear seats and you should have access to at least 1,500 liters of trunk space.

Inside, Volkswagen will likely reveal its high-tech nature with geeky features like gesture controls and double screens. They will make the current CC seem like it came from the dark ages.

A plug-in hybrid model is pretty much guaranteed to happen. However, it might not have the same tech as the Passat and Golf GTE. That's because the Sport Coupe features a turbocharged 3.0L gasoline V6 and a pair of electric motors for a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time of 5 seconds. If that ever makes it to production, it would be the most powerful Volkswagen available.
