The CC, as you might have guessed by now, is Volkswagen’s idea of a four-door sedan with a coupe-like sweeping roofline. Essentially a Passat with a prettier body shell, the Comfort Coupe lost its edge due to its humble origin and unexciting powertrains.
In this respect, the CC will be reinventing itself. When? In March 2017. Where? In Geneva, at the most important auto show of them all. The featured sketch is a teaser as to what the CC’s replacement will look like. Also, observe what’s written at the bottom right of the image. “Arteon" is a mashup of “Art” and “Eon.” According to VW, “Art describes the fastback's harmonious lines and emotionality.” “Eon,” however, is a nod to the China-only Phideon.
Positioned in the “upper mid-class” according to Europe’s car classification scheme by segments, the fastback-bodied Volkswagen Arteon will roll into dealer lots in summer 2017. Expected to be based on the MQB platform of the Passat B8, the Arteon will have its engine at the front, with drive sent to either the front or all wheels. So to speak, that’s a yes: the sexier sibling of the Passat will be made available with 2.0 TDI and 2.0 BiTDI power.
The cabin design, right down to the round-faced clock and the air vents, will mirror that of the Passat. Expected to share its wheelbase with the Passat, the flamboyant roofline of the Arteon is a tell-tale sign rear headroom will be an issue for taller fellows. To its defense, the upcoming model looks a whole lot better than the CC it replaces. Speaking of visual identity, doesn’t the side of the Arteon look suspiciously similar to a concept vehicle from a year ago?
Rewind to the 2015 Geneva Motor Show and yes, the resemblance between the Sport Coupe Concept GTE and Arteon is not a coincidence. If VW makes a case for it, a plug-in hybrid variant will be launched sometime in 2018. Just like the Passat GTE, the Arteon GTE could combine an electric motor and a 1.4-liter TSI for a total output of 218 PS (215 hp) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft).
