When it arrives at U.S. dealers next spring, the C-HR will be offered in two trim levels. And both are nicely equipped.
First, there is the C-HR XLE. In this configuration, the subcompact crossover marries features that include leather on the steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, power fold and heated mirrors, reversing camera, and dual-zone climate control.
The XLE Premium builds upon the entry-level offering, priding itself on heated fronts seats, power lumbar driver’s seat, auto folding mirrors, fog lamps, Smart Key with push-button start, as well as Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. For a small CUV, that’s a lot of stuff.
But wait, there’s more. Be it the XLE or XLE Premium, the standard features list for both models also includes a 7-inch touchscreen display, AM/FM and HD radio, USB and AUX ports, Bluetooth, and voice recognition. Designed by Hiro Koba, a man described as “a diehard racer,” the C-HR is anything but a racecar. That’s because the C-HR is powered by a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine described by Toyota as being “punchy.” Dear Toyota, define punchy.
144 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque make up for a punchy engine, but then again, the continuously variable transmission sucks every little bit of zest that engine has like a vacuum cleaner. Also, the 2018 Toyota C-HR with the 2.0-liter engine is available solely as a front-wheel-drive offering. The Euro-spec 1.2-liter CVT model, by comparison, can be had with all-wheel-drive.
MPG and MSRP haven’t been made public yet. After all, there’s still a long way to go until the C-HR goes on sale in the United States. Also, the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show is the C-HR’s first public outing on American soil. As a brief refresher, the C-HR made its debut back in March in Geneva, then was presented in production form in September at the 2016 Paris Motor Show.
