Renault is still testing the upcoming Megane RS, and our spy photographers have captured an advanced prototype while it was being benchmarked in Sweden.
This time, the French hot-hatch was spotted next to a Volkswagen Golf R. Our spies informed us that the two cars were being pitted against each other, and that the meet-up is not just a coincidence at a gas station.
While it may seem awkward to test a front-wheel-drive car against an all-wheel-drive model, Renault’s next Megane is expected to provide about 300 HP, and the Golf R is right on the money with its 2.0-liter TFSI unit.
You might argue that Volkswagen already has a front-wheel-drive hot hatch with 300 HP, but Renault was probably not happy about buying a limited-edition model from its main competitor.
Furthermore, benchmarking the next Megane RS against the Volkswagen Golf R made more sense when the process began, when some rumors pointed to the possibility of developing an all-wheel-drive version.
Moreover, putting the 2018 Megane RS against the Volkswagen Golf R in the snow and cold weather of Sweden in this time of the year is the perfect way to test the next generation of the French hot hatch.
High-powered front-wheel-drive models are known for their difficulty in managing torque steer, and snow only makes things worse. Thanks to this initiative, Renault is expected to come up with a way to help the Megane put as much of its power down in an efficient manner.
The body of the prototype seen in Sweden does not show any modifications when compared to its equivalents that were run on the Nurburgring earlier this year. You can observe that the front bumper has bigger air vents, and the fenders have been slightly modified to fit larger wheels, which may be installed on a wider track.
The signature mid-mounted exhaust is also visible on this prototype, which reaffirms its allegiance to the Renaultsport range.
