BMW singlehandedly invented the Sports Activity Coupe genre in 2008, when the German automaker launched the BMW X6. Many SAVs later from BMW and Mercedes-Benz alike, Jaguar Land Rover slept on the idea and decided that it’ll make one of its own: the 2018 Range Rover Sport Coupe (codename L560).
The fully disguised prototype in the following photo gallery is it. If you ignore the faux D-pillars, you’ll notice that this thing sports a flat and dipping rear window. Another area where the coupe-ified model differs from the Range Rover Sport is the side windows. In this application, the glasshouse is a bit leaner and a tad meaner, a stylistic artifice that pays dividend in the stance department.

Now squint your eyes and concentrate on the taillights and headlights. Yup, the peeps at Jaguar Land Rover are cooking something new here, something a bit different from what the Range Rover Sport has to offer. Speaking of differences, the 2018 Range Rover Sport Coupe rides on an aluminum platform. Give or take a few components, the backbone of this British interloper is based on what hides under the skin of the 2016 Jaguar F-Pace compact luxury crossover SUV (X761).

Slated to come to market in the calendar year 2018, the Range Rover Sport Coupe is expected to be presented to the public sometime in 2017. To slot between the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport, the biggest competitors of the new kid on the block will be the usual suspects in the Sports Activity Coupe segment: the mid-sized BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe.

As with most other products coming from Range Rover, the Sport Coupe will get an assortment of turbo diesel and petrol-powered engines. It’s not known if 2.0-liter four-banger powerplants will be offered, but V6 and V8 engines are sure to be offered.

If we’re lucky, the Special Vehicle Operations division of Jaguar Land Rover will bless the 2018 Range Rover Sport Coupe with a supercharged V8. A diesel- and electricity-fed SDV6 Hybrid powertrain could also be on the cards.
