Exactly two months ago, on April Fools' Day, we wanted to create a little mischief online and completely made up a story about a supposed Porsche 928 successor, which we called the Panamera Tertre Rouge Coupe.
As it turns out, we may have a bit of Nostradamus blood in us since Porsche seems keen on reviving the 928 after all. If it even turns out to have a design not unlike our April Fools' rendering, then our future as automotive prophets could be set in stone. Let us explain.

We recently received a set of spy photos depicting a rather peculiar 2017 Porsche Panamera mule. Despite what we first thought, it apparently isn't a mule for the second generation Bentley Continental GT, like an earlier prototype, but a slightly smaller and sportier Panamera, sans the rear doors. In other words, underneath all that battle-ready camouflage is the 928 revival we were talking 60 days ago!

Our spy photographers eloquently mention that, unlike the previous similar prototype mules, these ones have German license plates, signaling that there's a Porsche model under there, not its platform brother, the 2018 Bentley Continental GT. Unless Porsche is helping its cousins from Bentley with testing, which is highly unlikely.

Obviously, you should be talking all this with a decent amount of salt, but we've been right before. A modern 928 makes a lot of sense, and if Porsche plays its cards right, it will be a very successful model. It will drastically improve the profitability of the platform that underpins the upcoming Panamera, Panamera Shooting Brake and the Continental GT replacement.

Expect the model to feature an assortment of turbocharged V6 and V8 engines, with both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive traction available on most versions. Hopefully, a diesel version isn't in the works, but you never know these days. Hopefully, the Volkswagen Group, including Porsche, have learned something from the Dieselgate scandal.

Since this is an early mule, pre-production prototypes shouldn't be expected earlier than this fall on the roads, with the production version to be unveiled either in late 2017 or early 2018, alongside its brother from Bentley.
