2018 Porsche Cayenne (E3) Development Wraps Up After 4.4 Million Test Kilometers

The model line that saved Porsche from extinction started life in 2002, then the second-generation Cayenne went into production in 2010. Fast-forward seven years, and here we are today, on the brink of seeing the Cayenne E3 make its world premiere. ‘Till the wraps come off on August 29, the automaker is decided to hype us with little details about the new luxo-SUV.

First of all, the internal codename suffers a bit of a change from the preceding Cayenne generations. Known as the E3, the newcomer has recently finished pre-production testing. During the three-year trialing period, the engineers squeezed out 4.4-plus million kilometers out of prototypes.

Temperatures ranging from -45 to 50 degrees Celsius, from the Arctic Circle to the deserts of the Middle East, the 2018 Porsche Cayenne has been perfected through trial and error in the most inhospitable places on this big blue planet we call Earth. For a company known for high levels of quality, I wouldn’t have my brand new Cayenne otherwise. And from the looks of these camouflaged prototypes, the E3 is an evolution rather than a revolution.

Underpinned by the MLB Evo platform the Volkswagen Group employs in the Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga, future Lamborghini Urus, and next-gen Touareg, the 2018 Porsche Cayenne will be available with an assortment of V6 and V8 engines. It’s likely the range-topping model will borrow PHEV goodies from the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, translating to 680 ponies and tons of torque.

Diesel power in on the menu too, and all engine options are teamed up with an eight-speed automatic transmission of the torque-converter type. After the online reveal, look forward to seeing the Cayenne E3 in the flesh next month at the suprise-packed IAA 2017 (a.k.a. Frankfurt Motor Show).

In the United States, Porsche plans to bring the all-new Cayenne for the 2017 model year, with the entry-level model packing a force-fed V6.
