With Zuffenhausen getting closer and closer to revealing the new 991 line-up range-topper, the 2018 Porsche 911 GT (RS) has now been spotted doing its testing thing on the German Autobahn.
You don't need to be a car nut to figure out the rear-engined prototype stands out from a mile away. Even with the body still partially covered, the generously-sized rear wing on the Neunelfer makes it stand out like a stolen racecar driven on the road.

Porsche's camouflage goes deeper than that, though and we're talking about the content of the brachets in the intro. To be more precise, the Internet is still divided between those who believe these prototypes will get the GT2 badge and those who expect the full enchilada, namely the GT2 RS.

As we've mentioned in the past, we have at least two reasons to expect the release to be labeled as a GT2. First of all, it would be unusual to see the Rennsport label showing up directly, without a GT2 base. Secondly, we can talk about the timing - the GT2 RS is supposed to be one of the versions that waves goodbye to a generation, not show up one year after the said generation's mid-cycle revamp.

Sure, some even question the 2017 release of the 991 GT2 (RS) we have here, but we're pretty convinced that will be the case. After all, the second half of the year saw the GT2 (RS) test cars showing up all over the world, from the Nurburgring to California.

With or without the rumored limited numbers (the rumor mill talks about a 911R-like sold out debut for the GT2), we can't consider this Porsche a direct competitor for Ferraris or McLarens.

Even so, with Maranello and Woking's offerings reaching a stratospheric level of performance nowadays, Porsche engineers are striving to gift the GT2 (RS) with a shining performance aura.

And while 2016 can be considered the year of the Ferrari 488 GTB (the supercar has reached its customers), next year will see Mclaren releasing the successor of the 650S. Codenamed P14, the British supercar's actual name might just start with a "7", which kind of says it all.

Then again, Porsches were never the most powerful cars of their "class", achieving the best performance through their overall balance. As such, the 2018 911 GT2 should pack up to 650 ponies, while also employing the virtual anti-lag system that debuted in the 991.2 Turbo engine.

The only problem we have with this future car? The price. Porsche seems to be in the midst of a consolidated pricing increase strategy and with the level of engineering packed by this 911 derivative, your'll need a very, very good relationship with your financial consultant.
