MG. Sedan. Manufactured in China. If that’s not wrong enough for the purist to digest, just look at the damn thing! The MG6 is a mixture of Acura, Infiniti, and Hyundai styling, while the interior looks atrocious in black and red.
Remember when MG used to stand for Morris Garages? When the British automaker used to make lightweight and exciting two-seat sports car like the MGB and Midget? Well, those times aren’t coming back because the company is now a subsidiary of SAIC Motor. And in stark contrast to what Chinese money did to Volvo, MG is on a downward spiral in terms of brand awareness.
The MG6 is an all-new sedan with a fastback profile and fake air vents on the front fenders. Built on the same underpinnings as the Roewe i6, the MG6 will go on sale in China by year’s end, starting at the equivalent of $18,000 as per the current exchange rates. Overpriced or not, that’s up to you to decide.
MG argues the 6 is developed with young people in mind, although that’s a classic case of wishful thinking considering SUVs are the fastest-growing category of passenger cars on Chinese roads. Last year, sport utility vehicles accounted for 37 percent of passenger car sales in the Middle Kingdom, up from an abysmal 5.7 percent a decade ago. Sedans, therefore, are slipping into oblivion, and the youngest of new car buyers influence the market.
To understand how irrelevant is the MG6 compared to what we car lovers think about when we hear MG, have a guess how the infotainment system is called. I’m afraid not; it’s Zebra 2.0. To the Chinese interloper’s defense, the air vents don’t look half bad. But on closer inspection, the round-shaped vents outlined with silver trim resemble the units in the Mazda MX-5 Miata.
Last, but certainly not least, have a guess what sort of engine hides under the hood of this 4,695-mm long sedan. 1.5 liters, turbo, and 170 horsepower sent to the front wheels by a six-speed manual or an optional seven-speed dual-clutch box. Thanks, but no thanks, MG. Even though the 6 will make the trip to the UK in 2018, don’t expect it to be a hit with the British public.
