2018 Mercedes G-Class Prototype Spied on the Road, Sounds Like a V8

Rumors surrounding the 2018 model, codenamed W464, are about as ripe as grapes in the fall. They say everything from a hybrid to a clever suspension system that eliminates body lean might be available.

But this prototype doesn't appear to have any of that. It drives down the street and leans over just like any current G-Wagon would. Sure, it's a bit wider, but the front end kind of reminds me of a 70s military vehicle, which is not futuristic in the least bit.

Not only do you not have to fix it if it "ain't broken," but if you're already the champion, you have a better chance of claiming the title again.

From the American Youth Soccer Organization to polo and ballet, the G-Wagon is pretty much the official vehicle of spoiled kids being taken to practice. You see it in Moscow, New York, Abu Dhabi and all over London. Even though it rarely fulfills the purpose it was originally designed for, Mercedes is not turning the G-Wagon into a crossover. Instead, the manufacturer is polishing some of the details and sprinklings foie gras for a more luxurious taste.

Even though this prototype doesn't have the trademark enlarged air intakes of an AMG, you can still hear the rumble of a V8 engine. We are likely dealing with the next generation of the G500/G550, which might be the one everybody wants.

The interior will feel like less of an afterthought, thanks to a comprehensive suite of buttons, switches and 12.3-inch displays from the E-Class. Styling changes are about as subtle as those of a Porsche 911. It still looks like a brick, though every panel is reportedly different.
