In the always-complicated prototype testing business, carmakers sometimes take the time to go for small visual pranks, dressing up their test cars as vehicles coming from rival companies. While most such occasions involve full-vehicle stunts, others simply see parts of the prototypes being camouflaged to look like bits of the competitors, as is the case with the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe prototype seen here.
Zoom in on the rear side windows of this two-door E-Class and you might be tricked into believing Mercedes-Benz has pulled an Audi A5 on us. Frankly, with the 2018 A5 and S5 having made their debut last week at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the timing is perfect.

In fact, this part of the greenhouse is the last element of the 2018 E-Class Coupe that remains fully covered, following a process that has seen the sportier E-Class revealing its all-new panels one by one.

Once the camo seen here is removed, we should see the new Mercedes E-Class Coupe following the styling path of its predecessor, which should bring a third side window - we've added photos of both the outgoing E Coup and the 2018 A5 in the gallery to your right, so you can easily compare the two-door models.

The prototype spied here is wearing the standard body kit and those of you willing to check out the AMG Exterior Package should visit one of our previous stories.

As for the all-out Mercedes-AMG E63 Coupe, no prototype has been spotted to date. Even so, we've put together a what-we-know-so-far story, since the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 wielder deserves such a tale.

Mercedes-Benz will gift us with the new E-Class Coupe next year. And the idea that the two-door will no longer use an elongated C-Class platform, riding on the MRA platform seen on the C-Class, W213 E-Class Sedan and S-Class, is enough to keep us on our toes.
