2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe Starts at EUR49,051 in Its Home Market

Coupe models costing more than their sedan counterparts makes absolutely no sense from a rational point of view, but it's something we've come to expect and accept.

The 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe makes no exception. The base model - the E200 powered by a four-cylinder 2.0-liter gasoline turbo engine producing 184 hp - is over €6,000 more expensive than the sedan using the same powerplant.

Don't expect to find that extra money anywhere other than in the car's exclusivity and its elegant design. The simple fact that it'll take people some time to realize whether you're driving an E-Class Coupe or an S-Class Coupe is enough to convince some to splash out.

The entry-model for the E-Class Coupe, then, costs €49,051 in Germany, with 19% VAT included (€41,220 without it). Converted into U.S. dollars, that's $51,226 and $43,047 respectively. In this configuration, the Coupe is faster to the 100 km/h (62 mph) mark than the sedan by 0.3 seconds (7.8 compared to 8.1) and it also consumes marginally less fuel.

The only diesel version available so far is the E220 d with its 2.0-liter engine good for 194 hp and 33% more torque (400 Nm/295 lb-ft) than the base gasoline model. It's also quicker off the mark with 7.4 seconds required to reach 100 km/h (62 mph), but despite Mercedes-Benz's best efforts, it sacrifices a little of the vehicle's refinement.

The E220 d Coupe costs €42,500 before taxes, which translates into a full retail price of €50,575 in Germany, which is only €1,525 more than the E200 Coupe. The next model, however, is the E300 Coupe which has a base price of €46,000 (€54,740 including VAT).

It still doesn't move into the V6 zone by using the same 2.0-liter block, but this time producing 245 hp. That lowers the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time to just 6.4 seconds while also reaching the limiter on the top speed which is locked at 250 km/h (155 mph).

The range topper, for now, is the E400 4MATIC. It has a 3.0-liter V6 engine churning out 333 hp and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) and moves the Mercedes-Benz coupe from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph, in case you haven't got it by now) in just 5.3 seconds. That four-wheel-drive system definitely has something to say about that.

The Germans will have to save at least €64,807 (€54,460 excluding VAT) it they want to buy an E400 4MATIC, but they'd probably be better off waiting for Mercedes to introduce the new range of engines. However, those will be straight-sixes, so if for some reason they fancy the V-allignment, then it's already open season. Orders have already started and deliveries will begin in March 2017.
