We’re still waiting for the official launch of the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class that should happen before the end of the year - shortly followed by the model’s first outing at the 2016 North American International Auto Show - but the truth is we already know what to expect from Stuttgart’s new mid-sized sedan.
The car has already been caught on camera wearing virtually no camouflage, and besides that, how hard can it be to imagine a cross between the S-Class and the C-Class? The same can be said about the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé and its relationship with the coupés from its neighboring classes. More or less.
The first thing worth mentioning is that the new E-Class Coupé won’t be a glorified C-Class Coupé, like the current generation that uses the same chassis as the outgoing two-door compact Mercedes-Benz.
The 2018 version will be based on the MRA rear-wheel-drive modular architecture, just like the other bodystyles of the E-Class. That means a lot more interior room and a trunk that can actually fit other things besides a laptop suitcase.
That trunk will be considerably less useful on the cabriolet version, but more on that when the spy pictures of the roofless E-Class come in. Now, it’s all about the coupé, and another great exterior feature is the absence of the B-pillars, something that will give it a certain CL-like elegance.
The E-Class Coupé will follow in the sedan’s footsteps and do without the V6 engines in favor of the new modular inline sixes, as well as four-cylinder turbos for both gasoline and diesel. These units will be used up to the 400 hp mark, from where more serious powerplants take over.
Yup, the future E-Class Coupé has all the chances to receive an AMG version this time, powered by the wonderful 4.0-liter V8 engine developing around 600 hp here.
On the green side, the E-Class Coupé will have several hybrid options for both four- and six-cylinder engines, helping boost maximum power to match the output from BMW’s tri-turbo inline sixes.
On the inside, the E-Class Coupé will carry over the same dashboard layout from the sedan and wagon, and that should be a good thing. It will also feature all the gadgetry announced for the new E-Class, including that “autonomous highway cruising” ability Mercedes-Benz was quick to announce at the beginning of this year.
