We sometimes get the feeling there are just too many spottings of Mercedes-Benz cars, but then we realize that’s absolutely normal, given the hellish cadence at which the carmaker has been churning out new models lately.
Not a year passes without at least three major new models or facelifts coming from Stuttgart, and they don’t come any bigger than the E-Class. Well, looking at all the G’s beyond the GLC clearly shows that they do sometimes get larger, but that doesn’t necessarily mean more important.

The E-Class has been the bread and butter for Mercedes-Benz for many years, but out of the total number of sold cars, the percentage taken by the Coupé was certainly made up of a single digit. Still, that didn’t stop Mercedes-Benz from showing a lot of attention to the new E-Class Coupé, which is now undergoing winter testing somewhere close to the Arctic Circle (not that it couldn’t find winter conditions a lot further south from there).

Unlike its previous version, the new E-Class Coupé will use the same modular platform as its sedan counterpart, so there will be no more of that compressed look the current generation (built on a modified C-Class platform) has. That bit is already obvious from all the spyshots and videos we’ve seen: the car appears to have all the right proportions, with a long hood and a roofline that isn’t forced to drop abruptly because there’s nowhere left to go.

Have we mentioned the camouflaged car looks like a BMW 6 Series? Well, in all honesty, any car this size with a coupé body style that has all of its details covered by a Jackson Pollock painting would look like the BMW, so that’s not at all relevant right now.

After all, we do know what the E-Class Coupé’s design is going to look like: just take the front of the recently unveiled E-Class sedan and paste the rear of a C-Class Coupé with the necessary adjustments in size for a perfect fit, and there you have it. As for the side profile, that’s probably the one thing this camouflage foil can’t hide, together with the fact that the new car will have no B-Pillar - just one of those little things that make a special car out of one that would otherwise be just good.

This particular example appears to come with a generous sun or panoramic roof that goes further back to the limit of the front seats, but not quite enough to cover the rear ones. Speaking of which, momentarily we’ve got no idea about the available space at the back, but it would be reasonable to think that there won’t be too much of it, particularly regarding headroom.

In two of the photos, the E-Class T-Modell (or station wagon) can be seen riding just behind the Coupé, the family car being another version of the E-Class that awaits its time in the spotlights.

A lot has been said about the incredible level of tech available on the new E-Class, so expect all of it to make the transition over to the Coupé. The same can be said about the engines and transmissions, so there will be a large pool of combinations to choose from. The one thing customers shouldn’t ignore is the new 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission, which promises smooth gear changes as well as the best possible fuel efficiency.

The E-Class is certainly getting an AMG version, so even though there’s no official confirmation, since the new cars share the same platform, you really can’t see why the Coupé wouldn’t get the same treatment. After all, as cool as a sporty sedan or wagon is, if fun and optimal handling are what you’re after, it still makes more sense to get a two-door coupé. Well, we’re just doing our bit in case there’s anyone from AMG watching.
