Just a few days after our trusty spy photographers sent us the first ever image with the facelifted S63 Coupe testing in the wild, it's now time to check out its four-door brother, the 2018 Mercedes-AMG S63 sedan.
Just like its Coupe sibling, the updated S63 sedan will benefit from an all-new powerplant underneath that long hood, replacing the venerable 5.5-liter of the current model.
In case it wasn't obvious, the new mill is yet another version of the “hot inside vee” 4.0-liter V8 that was developed in-house by Mercedes-AMG. First introduced in dry-sump spec on the Mercedes-AMG GT, the twin-turbocharged V8 is already in use on the Mercedes-AMG C63 and even on the Mercedes-Benz G500 in a detuned version.
It is expected that the S63 will get a much more powerful variant of the engine, with 612 hp and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) to be expected in the worst case scenario. Combined with an AMG-tuned version of the new 9G-Tronic transmission and all-wheel-drive, the facelifted version of the S63 should drop the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration time to under four seconds.
Speaking of traction, it looks like the S63 facelift will become AWD-only in left-hand-drive countries, while markets like Great Britain, Japan, and/or Australia will be the only ones where the car will roast its rear tires exclusively.
As some of you already know, Mercedes-AMG will soon lose the 4Matic moniker for its all-wheel-drive models, with a new nomenclature to take effect in early 2017. This is mainly because almost all cars that have an Affalterbach badge use an AWD system tuned by AMG, despite being based on the “regular” Mercedes-Benz 4Matic.
Another novelty that you can observe in the adjacent photo gallery is the gigantic slab of display in the center console. It is no longer separated into two pieces, like on the pre-facelift model, and the bezel is almost invisible.
Despite having been spied almost at the same time as the coupe, it is expected that the 2018 Mercedes-AMG S63 sedan will go officially a bit earlier. Sometime in mid-2017 sounds like a good bet for those that are waiting.
