It was bound to happen at some point since the so-called Panamericana grille received a rather warm reaction after it was first fitted on the Mercedes-AMG GT-R.

The vertical slot grille has, therefore, found its way on the facelifted Mercedes-AMG S63 and S65 Coupe and Cabriolet, among other minor visual updates.

The headlights remain practically the same, while the taillights follow in the footsteps of the BMW M4 GTS, of all cars, and feature OLED technology. Each taillight includes 33 OLEDs that look pretty sleek and also combine to offer a Coming Home function.

As for the inside, there are new upholstery options, the front seats have more lateral support, and there is an all-new steering wheel. As expected from early spy photos, the two wide screens on top of the dashboard no longer have a visible bezel separating them, but the rest of the center console has remained unchanged.

The real changes are obviously underneath that beautiful bodywork, and they include a new engine, new transmission and a new all-wheel-drive system, all of them combined making the S63 Coupe and Cabriolet quicker than ever.

Thanks mainly to the advent of twin-scroll turbochargers, the 4.0-liter V8 is a lot more powerful and more frugal than its 5.5-liter predecessor. With 612 hp and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque on tap, both the S63 Coupe and Cabriolet can hit 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standing start in just 3.5 seconds, making them the quickest production four-seaters on the planet.

The old 7-speed has been replaced by the 9-speed multi-clutch transmission, which had its premiere on the Mercedes-AMG E63 W213, while left-hand-drive versions also get the E63's 4Matic+ AWD system.

Unlike the E63, which has a so-called “drift mode,” the revamped S63 Coupe and Cabrio only get the variable drive part, without having a RWD-only mode, but that shouldn't stop owners from getting the model's tail happy.

Those who are against brake fading can option the AMG ceramic high-performance compound braking system, which consists of the biggest brake discs you can fit on production car: 420 x 40 mm at the front and 360 x 32 mm at the rear.

The S65 Coupe and Cabrio only come with design and technology updates, since the twin-turbocharged, 6.0-liter V12 develops the same 630 hp and 1,000 Nm (738 lb-ft) of torque as before.

Instead of an Edition One, like it has accustomed us, Mercedes-Benz decided to offer a Yellow Night Edition for the S63 Coupe and Cabrio. It will only be available for the first six months of production and customers can choose between a selenite grey magno or night black magno paint for the exterior, which is also embellished by a yellow trim strip on the exterior mirror housings.

Deliveries should start a couple of months after the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show premiere.
