2018 Mercedes-AMG GT C Coupe Prototype Makes Nurburgring Debut with Flying Laps

While Mercedes-AMG is keeping us on our toes, waiting for the official Nurburgring lap time for the GT R, the Germans also enjoy giving us other reasons to think about the supercar.

Case in point with the prototype in the video below, which we think is the 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT C Coupe. We should also mention that certain aficionados out there, YouTube car spotter who uploaded this video included, believe this is the Black Series incarnation of the front-engined machine.

And while that model has been confirmed, AMG boss Tobias Moers explained that, as it usually happens, the Black Series label shows up towards the end of a model's lifecycle, hence our dismissal of such expectations for the moment.

Returning to the "C" part of the equation, this letter has just joined the GT line-up at the Paris Motor Show. And while we have the official data for the Mercedes-AMG GT C Roadster, a Mercedes-Benz product roadmap that leaked out earlier this year (you'll find it in the image gallery to your right) talks about a GT C Coupe coming next year.

Will this mark the introduction of the supercar's mid-cycle revamp, with the C replacing the S? It's too early to answer that.

Following the specs of the Roadster, the fixed-roof GT C will slot above the GT S, but won't be as extreme as the GT R we mentioned in the intro. To be more precise, the 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT C Coupe will squeeze 550 hp and 502 lb-ft of twist out of its twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8.

On the GT C Roadster, the extra muscle compared to the GT S (47 hp and 23 lb-ft) is easily highlighted with the help of a standard performance exhaust and we have to admit the spied prototype we have here is quite the screamer.

Just like in the case of the open-top model, the tech side of the GT C Coupe will treat us with a delightful melange involving the R's rear-steer system, adaptive shock absorbers, and an electronically-harnessed limited slip rear diff.

Then there are the wheel details - the GT C Convertible keeps the 19-inch front wheels of the GT S, but its rear wheels are one inch greater in both diameter and width (make that 20x12 inches).

For now, we can see the Coupe we have here doesn't act like it's anything less than the Beast Of The Green Hell (the nickname of the GT R) and that's because if flies over the vibrators in maximum attack mode.
