2018 Mercedes-AMG C63 R Coupe Comes to Crash the BMW M4 GTS Party

It's entirely possible that a few forehead veins popped at Mercedes-AMG when BMW unveiled the M4 GTS, the fastest Bavarian road car in history.

Either that or Affalterbach wants to make the “R” its fastest letter, because until a modern Black Series arrives, the 2018 Mercedes-AMG C63 R Coupe is likely to become the most track-ready C-Class ever.

In case it isn't obvious by now, the blue four-wheeled monster in the adjacent photo gallery is the first public appearance of the C63 R, here seen in pre-production guise.

The nutty engineers from Affalterbach decided that the limited edition BMW M4 GTS shouldn't run around on its own on the world's twistiest race tracks, so the second Mercedes-AMG road car to include the “R” moniker in its name has already started real life testing.

Apart from the obnoxious rear wing that will be supported by a carbon fiber trunk lid, there will be few details to differentiate the C63 R Coupe from the regular, run-of-the-mill, C63 S Coupe. At least this is what the first spy photos of the thing seem to suggest.

A much larger aerodynamic splitter can be observed at the front, but the way it's been glued on the bumper makes us believe that it looks pretty far from the end product. That said, since the C63 and C63 S Coupe are already quite a bit wider than the C63 and C 63 S Sedan, we don't think that the “R” will push the wheel arches even further from the body too much.

A new rear diffuser could also make an appearance, but other than that, the C63 R should simply look like a more hardcore version of the regular models.

Even so, the “Imma eat your soul if you don't move over” overall look is strikingly similar to that of the slightly more evil-looking M4 GTS, so we're looking forward to the first public meeting between the two track-ready models when the time comes.

We're not expecting too many surprises under the hood, at least not in the same vein as the water-injection magic sported by its archenemy from BMW, but there's bound to be a lot more power. Around 550 hp and 750 Nm (553.2 lb-ft) sounds like a nice improvement over the stock numbers, especially if it's corroborated with slightly less weight.

Not yet confirmed, but Mercedes-AMG could have made some room for the dry-sump lubrication system from the GT under the hood, which would mean that the C63 R is actually taking its “track-ready” credentials serious. Either way, the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time should drop under 3.7 seconds, while the Nurburgring lap time is expected to be under the 7:28 minutes achieved by the BMW M4 GTS earlier this year.
