Earlier this week, we met the 2018 Renault Megane RS on the Paris floor. And, before we could get to the plethora of changes found underneath the skin of the spicy hatchback, we were treated with the five-door appearance of the French toy.
While we approve of the practicality boost delivered by the newfound form of the hot hatch, there might still be nostalgics out there who lust for the body type of the retired model.

And, if you happen to belong to the said camp, we've got just the thing for you, namely a rendering that portrays a tree-door incarnation of the new Megane RS - pixel tip to Laurent Schmidt for this image.

Oh, and by the way, you shouldn't let the five-door form and the slightly downsized 1.8-liter engine (the previous car had a two-liter heart) trick you into believing the machine is anything but a serious step forward.

For one thing, the 2018 Renault Megane RS is the only car in its segment to feature 4Control four-wheel steering, while the front axle stopping power is provided by 355mm rotors and Brembo grabbers. Those willing to spend time on the track can also go for the optional bi-material cast iron and aluminum discs.

Underneath the hood, the turbocharged 1.8-liter engine, which is shared with the Alpine A110 sportscar, delivers either 280 hp and 390 Nm (288 lb-ft) of torque when in Sport or Cup configuration. However, those opting for the Trophy version of the car will get 300 hp and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of twist.

Oh, and by the way, the downsizing means the hot compact is now 11 percent more efficient.

The Renault Megane RS has never been the most powerful member of the go-fast hatch segment and yet this name has often made for the quickest hot hatchback in terms of lap times - the current holder of the FWD Nurburgring record, namely the 7:38 Honda Civic Type R, has plenty of reasons to be afraid.

The uber-Renault has also built a reputation for being one of the most engaging FWD machines ever built and we can't wait to see what happens when one throws the 2018 model at a bend.
