Lincoln’s next-generation Navigator is being prepared for its market launch. Before that happens, we have rounded up a few ideas about the model.
You already know that the Navigator is the flagship in the Lincoln range, and that it is based on the Ford Expedition platform. Both share their underpinnings with the F-150, which was somewhat recently renewed.
However, the aluminum-bodied F-150 did not get to influence the ongoing Expedition and Navigator, so this will change for the next generations of both models.
The 2017 Detroit Auto Show should bring the reveal of the 2018 Ford Expedition, which will receive the aluminum configuration launched on the Ford F-150. Along with increased rigidity, the platform delivers a reduced weight.
The platform of the Expedition will then be heavily modified by the specialists at Lincoln to create the 2018 Navigator. Evidently, by the time the Expedition will be revealed to the public, work on the next Navigator will probably be concluded.
Unfortunately, the next Navigator has not been seen by our spy photographers yet, but the next Ford Expedition has been identified a while ago. Naturally, the prototype seen in those spyshots could also be a Lincoln Navigator, because the two models share a platform and a boxy design, and the level of camouflage could easily conceal Ford’s premium division.
The full-size SUV from Ford is currently the biggest model in its class (valid for the EL version) available in the USA, and the same can be said about its successor if nobody else launches something with an even more spacious passenger compartment. Lincoln will also benefit from a roomy interior, which is something to be expected from a vehicle of that size.
Concerning design, the next Navigator is supposed to retain most of the features of the concept that was unveiled at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show. We are convinced that Lincoln will do this because the brand has applied a similar strategy with the Continental, which is another landmark for the American brand.
Evidently, the gullwing doors will not be introduced in production, and the rear seats will have room for more than two occupants. Expect to see the production Lincoln Navigator in late 2017 in a commercial starrring Matthew McConaughey.
