On December 4, Lamborghini will deliver an early Christmas present to expecting customers and car aficionados alike. The high-riding Urus is confirmed to make its world premiere on that Monday evening, and it will pack some serious performance. In fact, the Urus will slot into a new segment if Lambo is to be believed.
The teaser video for the Urus, which will arrive in the U.S. for the 2019 model year, is full of bragging right. First of all, here’s the transcript: “We are innovators. Rule-breakers. In a word, challengers. People follow along the same lines until someone comes and raises the bar, making the impossible possible. We predicted futuristic designs, we pioneered new roads. Ours is a a history that seemed impossible. #sincewemadeitpossible.” Neat, isn’t it?
But then you catch a glimpse of the Urus’ silhouette and a line that reads “the first super sport utility vehicle.” That’s a segment other automakers haven’t coined yet, even though the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk has 707 horsepower up its sleeve from a 6.2-liter supercharged V8. Lamborghini, by comparison, promises at least 650 PS from Porsche’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8.
Coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission, the Urus further promises unrivaled performance when the going gets twisty. Contrary to its indirect predecessor, the LM 002, the Urus prefers asphalt instead of going off the beaten path. Expected to hit more than 300 km/h (187 mph), the Lamborghini brother of the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7 could become the new king of the Green Hell as far as utility vehicles are concerned.
The fastest lap time for an SUV at Nurburgring is currently held by the former-gen Porsche Cayenne Turbo S (7:59.74). Alfa Romeo claims the Stelvio Quadrifoglio can better that, but the Italian company has yet to set a record-breaking lap time. Could Lamborghini foil Alfa Romeo’s plan? It wouldn’t be too surprising considering the Urus is engineered to be very fast.
Instead of a four-cylinder turbo and a diesel engine like the Stelvio, the Urus will gain a plug-in hybrid powertrain at some point in 2018. The electrified model should mirror the performance figures of the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, which boasts 680 metric ponies and a helluva lot of torque.
