Five years ago, Kia surprised us with the GT Concept. Later this year in the first month of 2017, the concept vehicle will morph into a production model. Cue the 2018 Kia GT, a RWD sedan with a coupe stance.
The new kid on the block is codenamed CK and, as it often happens with cars that are still in development, the nameplate of the production model has yet to be confirmed. Motoring believes that Stinger is the handle that will be given to the all-new model, but we’ll have to wait if that pans out. Wait until when? Well, the 2016 Paris Motor Show or 2017 Detroit Auto Show.
Whatever name Kia settles for the four-door sedan, one thing is certain: it is not going to disappoint. Our freshest set of spy pics tell it how it is: long, sleek, athletic, and surprisingly roomy based on the surface of the side glasshouse. It is something else, alright, especially when it comes down to the exterior styling.
Recent reports suggest that the 2018 Kia GT will ride on a platform derived from the one that underpins the 2017 Genesis G80 and, when you look at the sheer length and wheelbase of the thing, it appears to slot in the mid-sized sedan segment.
The curious bit is, the 2011 Kia GT Concept measures 4,690 mm (184,6 in) in length, dimensions that put it in the same category with the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe and Audi A5 Sportback. In this regard, the underpinnings could be shared with the 2018 Genesis G70.
Whatever the backbone of this thing, the proposition of a rear-wheel-drive sedan the size of a BMW 5 Series but priced similarly to a compact executive sedan is hard to resist.
