When it comes to force-fed 2.0-liter engines, the M133 from Mercedes-Benz is at the forefront of the horsepower wars. In the A45, CLA45, and GLA45, the four-cylinder blunderbuss produces 381 PS (376 hp; 280 kW), making it the most badass 2.0-liter on the market. Jeep, however, has the 2.0-liter Hurricane engine in the offing for the 2018 Wrangler, and yes, it's impressive.
In a letter addressed by FCA US LLC to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the automaker inadvertently confirms how powerful the engine is and three trim levels. Starting with the latter, the “4-door open top body” of the Wrangler will be offered in Sport Unlimited, Sahara Unlimited, and Rubicon Unlimited configurations. As for Jeep’s Hurricane turbo, the 2.0-liter is rated 368 ponies. In other parts of the world, that’s 373 PS/274 kW.
Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the second most powerful 2.0-liter turbo of the modern era. Torque isn’t available at the moment, but a figure in the low-to-mid 300s sounds good enough for the four-cylinder plant. Speaking of which, the Hurricane is part of the FCA Global Medium Engine family, and it’s related to the 2.0-liter MultiAir Turbo powering the 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia.
The entry-level Pentastar will soldier on with 3.6 liters displacement and 285 horsepower, whereas the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 isn’t listed in the document uploaded to the JL Wrangler Forums by Bearded_Dragon. With 240 hp and 420 lb-ft, the turbocharged diesel has all the right stuff to offer best-in-class fuel economy when shoehorned in the engine bay of the all-new JL/JLU.
Scheduled to go official at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show on November 27, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler is expected to go into production on November 13. In the first instance, it appears that the JLU Hardtop with the Pentastar V6 will roll off the assembly line. The Soft Top and Dual Top will follow on December 11, while the 2.0-liter Hurricane has Job #1 set for January 8, 2018.
