2018 Ford Mustang Reportedly Killing V6, 10-Speed Auto, Performance Packs Coming

You might have noticed Ford has been dropping plenty of Mustang EcoBoost goodies for the current S550 pony and, turbo-four love aside, there seems to be another reason for this tech reinforcement - the V6 is reportedly being put to sleep.

With the 2018 Mustang currently in the works, it seems the dealership order guides for the iconic Blue Oval model have leaked, announcing a number of important changes.

The tech details, which come to us thanks to the Mustang6G forum, also reveal plenty of goodies are coming our way. It all starts with the ten-speed automatic gearbox and since Ford and GM have joined hands to develop this tranny, it's only normal for the Mustang to mirror the sixth-gen Camaro on this front.

The Blue Oval is also sourcing the fresh hardware from inside the current Mustang line-up, as the Shelby GT350's adaptive MagneRide dampers are set to be spread throughout the line-up, albeit possibly with a different tune.

Then we have the Performance Package 2, a development that should join the current Performance Packages being offered for the current EcoBoost and GT 'Stangs. This could be Ford's response to the track-destined 1LE package of the Camaro, which has scored impressive results in terms of lap times.

There's no reason to cry over the demise of the V6 Mustang, which seems like a leftover, delivering inferior performance to the turbo-four model. However, it's worth noting that Chevrolet introduced the 1LE package for the V6 Camaro alongside the one destined for the V8-animated model, following customer demand. GM has a different strategy for the Camaro line-up, as the naturally aspirated V6 is noticeably superior to the 2.0-liter turbo in terms of power, while the two are close in terms of the peak torque.

Returning to the 2018 Ford Mustang, the leaked details also talk about a Dual Exhaust option, once again something that seems to follow the dual-mode exhaust of the Shelby GT350. Then we have a Carbon Sport Package, which should bring a touch of the wonder material to the pony.

With previous reports talking about the 2018 model year potentially bringing us the new Shelby GT500 forced-fed demon, we're already rubbing our hands in excitement for the unveiling of the Ford hero. Meanwhile, you can check out the spyshots of the 2018 Mustang in the image gallery to your right.
