While the face may polarize opinion, the redesigned Mustang is safer, faster, more technologized, overall better than the pre-facelift S550. After its unveiling at the 2017 Detroit Motor Show, the world’s most revered pony car took to the IAA 2017 to brag with its European specification. And the thing is, the 2.3 EcoBoost is the biggest letdown of the Euro-spec 2018 Ford Mustang.
Compared to yesteryear’s 317 metric horsepower (313 brake horsepower), the mid-cycle update is capped at 290 PS (286 hp). “Preposterous,” you might say, and you’re right about it. The downgrade, apparently, comes as a result of increased exhaust back pressure and the addition of a particulate filter. As per FoMoCo, the changes were made to meet the Euro 6.2 emissions standard.
Despite the lesser ponies, the Blue Oval crosses its heart performance isn’t affected thanks to the addition of the 10-speed automatic transmission and the overboost function of the 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. When all is said and done, Europeans want to live the American dream behind the wheel of a Mustang, which is why the Coyote V8 is the more appropriate powerplant.
Compared to the EcoBoost, the naturally aspirated 5.0-liter unit now develops 450 PS (444 hp) thanks to the dual-injection system and a couple of other small changes. Provided the driver launches the car perfectly off the line, the Mustang GT with the optional 10-speed box will hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in less than 4.0 seconds, making it a spritely contender for green-to-red-light racing.
Regardless of engine, the 2018 Ford Mustang in mustan ships with hood vents and the 12-inch digital instrument cluster from the get-go. For customers who want to exploit the pony car’s performance to the fullest, the optional bits list now contains a line that reads MagneRide adaptive dampers.
Unfortunately, the Shelby GT350 still isn’t go for Europe, and won’t be in the near future considering 2018 is the last model year of the flat-plane crank V8-powered monster. The GT500 is right around the corner, though, and one can only wish for the Ford Motor Company to bring it over to the Old Continent to kick some ass.
